Make these sticky BBQ chicken wings coated in a thick, sweet honey glaze. This recipe focuses on achieving crispy skin and a deeply caramelized, flavorful coating.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs chicken wings, separated into flats and drumettes
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder (for crisping)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup prepared BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with foil and place a wire rack on top.
  2. Pat the chicken wings completely dry with paper towels. This step is important for crispiness.
  3. In a bowl, toss the wings with baking powder, salt, and pepper until evenly coated.
  4. Arrange the wings in a single layer on the wire rack.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes. Flip the wings and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until the skin is golden brown and crisp.
  6. While the wings bake, prepare the glaze: Combine the BBQ sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, soy sauce, and smoked paprika in a small saucepan.
  7. Bring the sauce mixture to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 8 to 10 minutes until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon. This creates the sticky texture.
  8. Remove the baked wings from the oven.
  9. Place the hot wings in a large bowl. Pour about two-thirds of the thickened honey BBQ glaze over the wings and toss gently until every piece is coated.
  10. Return the glazed wings to the wire rack on the baking sheet.
  11. Bake for an additional 5 minutes to set the glaze.
  12. Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and toss with the remaining fresh glaze just before serving for extra stickiness.

Notes

  • For extra crispy wings, do not skip the baking powder step before the initial bake.
  • If you prefer grilling, cook the wings over medium heat until done, then brush heavily with the glaze during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
  • You can substitute brown sugar for some of the honey if you prefer a deeper molasses flavor in the glaze.
