Ingredients
Scale
1 1/2 cups crushed pretzels
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
1 teaspoon sea salt, plus extra for sprinkling
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening
Instructions
Line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides for easy removal.
In a medium bowl, combine the crushed pretzels, melted butter, and granulated sugar. Mix until the crumbs are evenly moistened.
Press the pretzel mixture firmly and evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Place the pan in the freezer while you prepare the caramel.
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sweetened condensed milk, caramel sauce, and 1 teaspoon of sea salt. Stir constantly until the mixture is smooth and just begins to bubble around the edges, about 3 to 5 minutes. Do not boil vigorously.
Pour the warm caramel mixture evenly over the chilled pretzel crust. Return the pan to the freezer for 30 minutes, or until the caramel is set enough to touch lightly.
In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each, until the chocolate is smooth.
Pour the melted chocolate over the set caramel layer. Spread the chocolate evenly. Immediately sprinkle the top lightly with extra sea salt.
Refrigerate the bars for at least 2 hours, or until completely firm.
Use the parchment paper overhang to lift the bars from the pan. Cut into 16 squares before serving.
Notes
For a gluten-free option, substitute gluten-free pretzels in the crust.
If you prefer a stronger salty flavor, increase the added sea salt in the caramel layer to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to one week. These bars freeze well for up to one month.
