Make these simple, sweet and salty butter toffee pretzels. This recipe is quick to prepare and results in a satisfyingly crunchy snack perfect for holidays or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 bags (10-12 oz each) small hard pretzels
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • Optional: 1 cup toffee bits

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Spread the pretzels evenly onto the prepared baking sheets. Do not overlap them.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  4. Stir in the brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Boil for exactly one minute.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and baking soda quickly. The mixture will foam up.
  6. Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the pretzels on both sheets. Use a spatula to spread it slightly.
  7. If using, sprinkle the toffee bits over the coated pretzels now.
  8. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and stir the pretzels gently with a spatula to coat any dry spots.
  9. Return to the oven and bake for another 15 minutes.
  10. Remove from the oven and let the pretzels cool completely on the baking sheets before breaking them apart.

Notes

  • For a chocolate drizzle, melt 6 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips and drizzle over the cooled pretzels.
  • You can substitute the vanilla extract with 1/4 teaspoon almond extract for a different flavor.
  • Store cooled toffee pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature.
