Ingredients
Scale
3 pounds apples (like Gala or Fuji), peeled, cored, and chopped
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
Instructions
Place the chopped apples, water, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a large pot. If you want a brighter flavor, add the lemon juice now.
Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
Once simmering, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and cook for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Cook until the apples are very tender and easily mashable.
Remove the pot from the heat. You can leave the applesauce chunky or mash it smooth using a potato masher or an immersion blender for a smoother texture.
Taste the applesauce. If you prefer it sweeter, add a small amount of maple syrup or sugar, though the natural sweetness of the apples is usually enough.
Serve the homemade applesauce warm, or chill it completely for a refreshing snack.
Notes
For a no-peel applesauce, simply chop the apples with the skin on. The skins will break down during cooking, but you may need to strain the mixture if you want a very smooth result.
This recipe is great for meal prep; store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
If you want a cozy fall aroma, add a whole cinnamon stick during cooking and remove it before serving.
