Make perfect, golden French toast quickly. This simple recipe uses common ingredients to give you a custardy center and crisp edges every time. It is a foolproof breakfast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 slices thick bread (like brioche or challah)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined. This is your foolproof French toast batter.
  2. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add half of the butter and let it melt until it sizzles slightly.
  3. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides completely. Let the excess drip off for just a moment. Do not let it soak too long, or it will become soggy.
  4. Place the coated bread onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until the French toast is golden brown and cooked through.
  5. Remove the cooked slice and keep it warm while you cook the remaining slices, adding more butter to the skillet as needed.
  6. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings. You earned this delicious breakfast!

Notes

  • For extra fluffy French toast, use slightly stale or thicker-cut bread.
  • If you want a richer flavor, substitute half of the milk with half-and-half.
  • Dust with powdered sugar or serve with maple syrup for a classic sweet breakfast treat.
