Create a stunning Classic Apple Pie with Decorative Crust that will impress everyone with its beautiful fall presentation. This recipe is designed to be achievable, focusing on making happy memories in the kitchen.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled, cored apples (about 6 medium apples)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 recipe for double-crust pie dough
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and lemon juice.
  3. Line a 9-inch pie plate with one pie crust. Trim the edges, leaving about a 1/2-inch overhang.
  4. Pour the apple filling into the crust-lined pie plate.
  5. Place the second pie crust over the filling. You can create a decorative top by cutting out shapes or making a lattice. Trim the edges, then crimp them together with the bottom crust to seal.
  6. Brush the top crust with the beaten egg wash and sprinkle with the extra tablespoon of sugar.
  7. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C).
  8. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for another 35-45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  9. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least 2-3 hours before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use a mix of apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • If your crust starts browning too quickly, loosely tent it with aluminum foil.
  • Allowing the pie to cool completely ensures the filling sets properly.
