Ingredients
Scale
1 pound ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained
4 cups beef broth
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
8 ounces elbow macaroni or small pasta shape
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
Brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
Pour in the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (with juice), beef broth, oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
Bring the mixture to a boil.
Add the dry pasta to the skillet. Stir well to submerge the pasta.
Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and simmer for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Remove the skillet from the heat. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the pasta mixture.
Cover the skillet again for 3 to 5 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt completely. Serve directly from the skillet.
Notes
Use a sturdy, oven-safe skillet if you prefer to melt the cheese under the broiler for a few minutes instead of covering it.
You can substitute Italian seasoning for the dried oregano if needed.
For a richer flavor, use half beef broth and half water for the liquid base.
